Tagging Identity: Graffiti as Expression
Graffiti Workshop @ Mudam
Tagging Identity: Graffiti as Expression invites participants to discover the origins of graffiti and its emergence as a cultural movement in the 1980s, exploring its role as a form of identity, visibility, and creative expression.
Through an introduction to graffiti’s visual language and techniques, participants will create a personalised ceramic tile featuring their own tag to take home, while also contributing to a large-scale collaborative graffiti artwork. The collective piece, completed with the invited graffiti artist Jo Malano, will be exhibited as a shared work celebrating the energy, diversity, and collaborative spirit of graffiti culture.
For this activity, participants are invited to wear or bring old clothes that they don't mind getting dirty.
Biography: Jo Malano was born on June 29, 1995, in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. Before turning to art, he spent many years focused on sports, playing handball. His creative career began around 2013, when he transferred from the Institut national des sports (INS) to the Lycée des Arts et Métiers, where he graduated in 2014 from the “division artistique, section audiovisuel.” It was there that he met many friends who shared his creative interests, an encounter that ignited his passion. From then on, he participated in numerous exhibitions as well as large-scale outdoor graffiti projects. His style defies easy categorization, which is why his biography includes both gallery exhibitions and outdoor work. For example, the group show “Locals” at the Centre d’Art Dominique Lang and Nei Liicht, Dudelange in 2016, the “Exposition de printemps du CAL” at the Tramsschapp, Luxembourg in 2023, or “Fioritura” at the Galerie Schlassgoart, Esch-sur-Alzette in 2024, as well as live painting at the “Nuit de la Culture”, Esch-sur-Alzette in 2019 and “Graffiti am Park”, Hesperange in 2019, and the group exhibition “Metzeschmelz” by CUEVA, Esch-sur-Alzette/Schifflange in 2022. His art blends abstraction and figuration, always seeking a balance—whether between emotions or between forms and colours.

Proud of what?
Have you ever thought “I should write a book about that!” or scribbled into your notes so beautifully that the content on the page became subordinate? déi aner invites the community to let go of the status quo that dictates which thoughts merit being read and which don’t.
After this year’s Pride, we wonder: what are we even proud of? When LGBTQ+ celebrations become co-opted by big companies complicit in genocide, neoliberal institutions funding war crimes and politicians trying to seem relatable, do we not become part of the oppressor class? When the rainbow flag is used to mark conquered territory in Gaza, how do we keep the revolutionary flame of queerness alive?
Whether you identify as queer, gay, ally, or just a random dude, we want to hear from you to remember past struggles and imagine new realities in which people have fought to be themselves. Political manifesto, scrapbook, or silly comic, the zine bends to accommodate whatever language you speak to it.
In light of the Common Ground exhibition’s themes, which revolve around visibility, cultural expression, and collective experience, déi aner hopes to use this zine workshop to examine these themes closely through a queer lens. Taking the Stonewall riots as a prime example, we can see just how political the nightlife scene is, especially for queer people, due to the uprisings that followed police raids on queer bars. It is important to see how these people defended their rights at the heart of the city’s underground nightlife scene and how this has become, today, a springboard and a source of inspiration for queer liberation around the world.
déi aner is a new media and community-building collective that centers the marginalized in everything it does. WE ARE THE OTHERS, THE EXCLUDED, THE ALTERNATIVE, THE QUEERS. We are the ones who don’t fit in. Through stories, events, and shared experiences, we come together to be seen, heard, and connected in resistance and solidarity.

Inauguration of the pleasure dome

Directed in 1954 by Kenneth Anger, an underground filmmaker known for his homoerotic work, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome is regarded as a major work of American experimental cinema.
The film is a demonic reimagining of Hollywood’s grand style. It draws on influences from both Lachman’s Dante’s Inferno and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, blending sacred ritual with operetta pastiche.
Anger sought to create a sense of being transported to a wondrous world, through the use of colour and dream imagery that gradually progresses towards total subjectivity, as if the viewer were seeing through the eyes of the characters in the midst of a ritual communion.
The film exists in three versions, two dating from 1954 and 1966, featuring music by Leoš Janáček (Glagolitic Mass), and a 1977 version with music by the Electric Light Orchestra (Eldorado).

Literary baddies book club @ Rotondes

This month, the Literary Baddies Book Club returns to the source, i.e., Homer’s The Odyssey, one of the founding texts of Western literature and arguably the first portrait of a hero you’re not sure you should be rooting for.
We’ll be discussing Odysseus’s particular brand of moral complexity: the lying, the surviving at everyone else’s expense, the gods who make everyone a little bit innocent and a little bit doomed. Also: Christopher Nolan’s adaptation hits cinemas this week, and we’re definitely going.
Anyone is welcome regardless of finishing the book – or the epic poem, or the past three millennia of discourse – but beware of spoilers.

City Open Air Cinema @ Place Léon XIII

Summer evenings once again take on the magic of cinema. The Luxembourg City Cinémathèque invites you to discover a new edition of the City Open Air Cinema. And this year, our open-air screenings are celebrating their 40th anniversary!
Cinema Under the Stars: Since 1986, the Cinémathèque has maintained a long-standing tradition of open-air screenings, held in a variety of iconic locations across the city: from the Cour des Capucins and the forecourt of the Grand Ducal Palace to the drive-in cinema on the Glacis, and today still in the heart of the capital. A wonderful opportunity to celebrate together a summer tradition that has become a true fixture of Luxembourg’s cultural life.
A new addition this year: the Cinémathèque will also be bringing the magic of cinema to Bonnevoie. On the charming Place Léon XIII, our screen will be set up for three convivial open-air film evenings.

Everybody loves bingo @ Rotondes

Everybody Loves Bingo is a dynamic cultural mediation event that merges the Common Ground contemporary art exhibition with the bold, vibrant energy of La Queerdom, a Metz-based drag collective. Together, they transform the Galerie into a space of connection, where humour and symbolism break down barriers and invite everyone to engage with art in a fresh and unfiltered way.
This project isn’t just about drag, it’s about redefining accessibility in art. By blending drag performance with a trivia bingo game, it turns the exhibition into an interactive adventure, encouraging participants to explore contemporary art through play, curiosity, and a touch of rebellious joy. The goal is to challenge how we see art, dismantle pretenses, and prove that creativity, like drag, belongs to everyone.
And because fun should always come with a reward, the evening wraps up with prizes from Rotondes, as little souvenirs of the experience. Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or someone who’s never set foot in a gallery, Everybody Loves Bingo promises a night of discovery, laughter, and connection where the only rule is to leave your expectations at the door.
Building a community: Through this series, the organisers are not just celebrating drag and art. Their aim is to build a community where learning, play, and cultural exchanges thrive.
In the spirit of bringing different communities together, the bingo games will be organised a little differently depending on the audience.

Moves & Attitudes: 80s Dance Practices
Movement Workshop @ Mudam
Mudam’s Summer Project continues with a movement workshop that shifts the focus from listening to embodied experience. Building on the musical themes explored earlier in the day, this session invites participants to discover how the sounds, rhythms and cultural movements of the 1980s found expression through dance.
Led by professional dancer Diogo Dos Santos, the workshop will explore dance practices that emerged or gained international visibility during the decade, including breakdance and hip-hop. Combining practical movement with cultural context, participants will be introduced to the histories, communities and creative energy that shaped these influential dance forms, from their roots in local street cultures to their lasting impact on contemporary dance and popular culture.
Open to participants of all levels, this activity encourages curiosity rather than technical mastery. Through guided exercises and shared movement, we invite you to experience how dance became a form of expression, identity, and collective exchange.
Biography: Diogo Dos Santos Canais is a professional dancer, choreographer, and educator from Luxembourg whose journey in hip-hop culture spans nearly two decades. Beginning in Breaking, he later expanded his training across hip-hop, House, Popping, Locking, and other street dance styles, forging a distinctive artistic voice rooted in strong foundations, musicality, and performance. Driven by a constant desire to grow, Diogo has regularly travelled to Los Angeles since 2015 to train with internationally renowned choreographers and educators, including Andye J, Rob Rich, Sienna Lyons, Brian & Scott Nicholson, and Lee Daniel, among others. These experiences have played a defining role in shaping both his artistic identity and teaching philosophy. In 2018, he chose to pursue dance as an independent full-time professional while beginning to teach advanced classes and workshops internationally. His work has taken him across Luxembourg and Europe, teaching workshops in France, Iceland, and Spain, choreographing productions performed at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, creating live performances for artists, and coaching singers and musicians to elevate their stage presence. Alongside teaching and choreography, he continues to train, create, and coach competitive dancers, bringing both artistic vision and technical precision to every class. Passionate about preserving the essence of Hip Hop culture while encouraging personal expression, Diogo strives to give dancers not only the tools to improve technically, but also the confidence to develop their own artistic voice.

On 15–16 August 2026, Bâtiment 4 in Esch-sur-Alzette will become a meeting place for sounds, stories, cultures, and people. The festival brings together concerts, workshops, masterclasses, film screenings, community kitchen moments, ancient games, and informal spaces to meet, listen, play, learn, and connect.
The concerts, films, and community kitchen dishes in this programme were developed throughout BELONG’s year-long workshops, residencies, and collective creation process.
